Douglas College

Entrance awards are available to students entering Douglas College in September directly from high school.   The deadline to submit online applications is April 1, 2016.  Supporting documentation must be received at either one of our offices by April 8, 2016.

 Students can apply for the Douglas College Entrance Awards on-line between February 1, 2016 and April 1, 2016.  
 The Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited Entrance Awards, offered to students for whom the cost of pursuing a post-secondary education would be a serious impediment, still requires a paper application form with a detailed budget.  The application form can be downloaded and printed from our website at:  http://www.douglascollege.ca/student-services/financial/financial-aid/scholarships/applying
 
Each candidate for an entrance award is required to submit: 


•a completed application form
  *an online form for Douglas College Entrance Awards and/or
 *paper application if applying for the Fairfax Financial Holdings

 •an official  transcript showing final marks for Grade 11 and interim marks for Grade 12,
•Evidence of community and/or school involvement.  Students can list their activities with dates in the appropriate section of the online application or the Scholarship Volunteer Activity Form (attached) can be completed.

Royal Canadian Legion Bursary

The Royal Canadian Legion, Delta Branch #61, is pleased to offer the Bursary
program again this year.


We encourage all eligible students to apply, there are four bursaries and
only two require the student to have a family member who was/is a veteran. A
veteran is defined by the Royal Canadian Legion as "Any person who is
serving or has honorably served in the Canadian Armed Forces, the
Commonwealth or its wartime allies, or as a Regular Member of the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police, or as a Peace Officer in a Special Duty Area or on
a Special Duty Operation, or who has served in the Merchant Navy or Ferry

Command during wartime" The primary criteria for this bursary is financial
need.

The online application is located by logging into a student's myKwantlen account and clicking on the online self-service tab. Students require their KPU User ID (Student Number) and PIN to log in. When logged in, please follow these steps:
  1. Click on “Student Menu"
  2. Click on “Student Awards and Financial Assistance”
  3. Click on “Award Application”.
  4. Ensuring that the Application Type you have selected is Fall Term 2016 - Major Entrance Scholarships & Awards, click “Apply” and begin completing the application.
  5. Important – ensure you click “Yes” to the Terms & Conditions on the Personal Declaration page in order for your application to be successfully submitted.
  6. Hand-deliver or mail in all your supporting documentation (in duplicate) by the application deadline.

a) must be a student enrolling at KPU for the first time
b) must satisfy one of the following academic requirements:
- an 80% average in English 12 and 3 other academic Grade 12 courses, or
- the equivalent of a 3.67 transfer GPA on a minimum of 24 transferable university credits
c) must demonstrate leadership, community involvement and volunteerism (documentation required)
Conditions
a) enrolling in a four-year program at KPU
b) registration in a minimum of 12 undergraduate credits per semester
c) required to maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.0 for the duration of the award period
Value & Quantity
Fall Semester Intake:
a) 4 awards

Spring Semester Intake:
a) 2 awards

THE MERIT SCHOLARSHIP - $5,000

Stacey Levitt Memorial Award

About the Award:

The Stacey Levitt Memorial Award was created in memory and celebration of Stacey’s life by her family through Parachute. This annual high school student award encourages Canadian youth to embody Stacey’s qualities and ideals and Parachute’s overarching goal of a long life lived to the fullest, while maintaining an approach that is rooted in risk management and injury prevention.
The Levitt family awards each year's selected recipient $2,500 in funding to help them live their life to the fullest. The award could be put towards an educational endeavour, engagement in sports, or investment in a travel experience – all pursuits that would have resonated with Stacey. Award recipients are expected to write a reflection on the impact of the funding on their life, due within one year of the distribution of funds.

The British Columbia School Superintendents Association will award 6 scholarships to students planning to pursue post-secondary studies

Students wishing to be considered for a scholarship must be currently enrolled in their final year of studies at a public secondary school in British Columbia and expected to graduate in June 2016. One winner will be chosen from each of the six BCSSA provincial chapters. Each winner will be awarded a $1000 scholarship.
In selecting the recipients for this year’s awards, the scholarship committees will consider academic achievement, as indicated on each applicant’s school transcript of grades, and demonstrated exemplary service and leadership within the school and community. Letters of reference will be required affirming the applicant’s accomplishments and efforts to improve the quality of life for young people and others through volunteer work and other activities. In addition, the applicant must submit a short description (450 words maximum) of how his/her volunteer service has made a difference in the life or lives of others.

Joint Diversity Scholarship - 2016


Program Agenda

The Overwaitea Food Group is proud to have partnered with UFCW Local 1518 to establish a Joint Diversity and Training Trust to support and maintain a respectful and positive working environment. Our goal is to work collaboratively to promote diversity awareness and build strong, healthy and mutually beneficial relationships within the diverse communities that we serve.
Criteria for Application

The Joint Diversity and Training Trust is offering 10 scholarships valued at $1,000 each to individuals who have played a significant role in diversity initiatives in their school and/or community.

The UFCW & OFG Joint Diversity Scholarship is open to residents of British Columbia who are pursuing a part-time or full-time post-secondary program in BC. Applicants can be in any stage of their post-secondary education. To be eligible, applicants must be registered to attend an accredited post-secondary education in the fall of 2016. Please note that because of other scholarship opportunities uniquely available to OFG team members and their dependants, members of this group are excluded from eligibility.

In the application process, applicants are asked to describe their career goals and objectives as well as their involvement with activities that promote diversity awareness and acceptance in their school and/or community.

Each year, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) offers four scholarships that reflect its pursuit of equal opportunity for all workers. Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

Eligibility Criteria

Terry Fox Humanitarian Awards are open to students of all abilities.
To be considered, applicants must meet be:
  • In good academic standing.
  • Canadian citizens or landed immigrants.
  • Students who have already completed secondary (high) school OR are graduating from secondary (high) school in the coming year OR those completing their first year of CÉGEP
  • Involved in voluntary humanitarian activities (for which they have not been compensated).
  • Planning to or already studying towards their first university degree or diploma at a Canadian post-secondary institution, or entering their 2nd year of CÉGEP in the upcoming academic year.
Terry Fox Award Recipients are eligible to receive the Award until they graduate with their first university degree or diploma (for a maximum of four years), provided they maintain satisfactory academic standing and a standard of humanitarian work and personal conduct which, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, justifies the award. The Award is not applicable to postgraduates OR those seeking a second university degree.


ValueThe maximum value of the award is $28,000 dispersed over four years. A stipend of $7,000 is issued directly to the institution each year in two installments of $3,500, one in September and one in January. For students who do not pay tuition fees, the award is $3,500 per year, issued directly to the institution in two installments of $1,750 each.
Recipients of the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award may not receive more than $15,000 in total scholarships (including the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award). If a student’s awards exceed this amount, any excess will be deducted from the student’s Terry Fox Award.
If a student’s academic expenses are covered by another source, they may choose to decline acceptance of the financial portion of the award. They will still be granted the distinction of being a Terry Fox Scholar.

The BC Government and Services Employee's Union is offering scholarships again this year to students who are related to BCGEU members and who are entering recognized programs in post-secondary institutions in 2016. 
The scholarship program will be open to part time and full time students with a total of $45,000 being awarded.  $3,000 will be awarded to full time students and $2000 to part time students.

Please note we recognize students with an IEP may want to enter post secondary programs but find it difficult to write the answers to the two essay questions provided in the application.  As such, we are allowing those students to submit their answers using an audio format.

BC Excellence Scholarship

There are 55 BC Excellence Scholarships available to recognize well-rounded B.C. graduates. Winners will have demonstrated community service, both inside and outside their schools, and shown aptitude and commitment to their chosen career paths. They will receive a $5000 scholarship voucher to use for post-secondary tuition.
Students must be nominated for this scholarship by their school. If nominated, the student must submit the application (PDF) to their school, who will forward it to their school district.
School districts and FISA should forward applications to the Ministry of Education for adjudication by the selection committee by March 31.

A student cannot win both a BC Excellence Scholarship and a Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship.

Nominees must:
  • Meet basic eligibility requirements
  • Be enrolled in or graduated from a B.C. Grade 12 graduation program
  • Be eligible for a BC Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma) by August 31st of the school year in which they are nominated
Selection CriteriaNominees’ applications will be assessed on the following criteria. Nominees must:
  • Meet basic eligibility requirements
  • Be in their graduating year, with graduation to occur by August 31 or sooner of the year in which they are nominated
  • Have at least a:
    • "B" (73% or above) in their Language Arts 11 final mark 
    • "B" average in Grade 11 final course marks that fulfill graduation requirements of Science 11, Math 11 and Social Studies 11, with no more than one "C+" (67% or above) final course mark, (marks lower than “C+” are not accepted)
  • Maintain a “B” average in Grades 11 and 12 final course marks required for graduation
  • Submit a resume
  • Provide two references, one from their community and one from their school
  • Provide a written statement (maximum 500 words) describing:
    • What lead them to their community service, volunteer activity, and/or leadership role
    • What they learned from this involvement
    • How these skills/experiences will benefit them in their chosen career path
Nominee’s Application PackageOnly students who have been nominated by their schools should complete the Ministry’s application package and submit it to their schools. School districts and FISA must forward the completed application packages (PDF) for their nominees to the Ministry by March 31, 2016, for adjudication by the selection committee.

Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship

The Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship (PTES) is awarded to 20 outstanding high school graduates who have demonstrated a commitment and aptitude for a career path in K-12 teaching. Each recipient will receive a $5000 scholarship voucher to use towards tuition in their teaching program at a designated BC post-secondary institution.
A student cannot win both a Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship and a BC Excellence Scholarship.
To apply, please complete the following application form and submit it to us along with all required documents by March 31, 2016.

EligibilityA student applying for this scholarship must meet basic eligibility requirements and be:
  • In their graduation year with graduation to occur by August 31
  • Eligible for a B.C. Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma)
Selection Criteria for ApplicantsWe’re looking for applicants who are:
  • Maintaining a ‘B’ average (73% or above) in all Grade 11 and 12 courses required for graduation
    • with no more than one Grade 12 mark at a ‘C+’ level (67% or above)
  • Showing evidence of commitment and aptitude for a teaching career in the K-12 system
Selection of winners will be finalized by August 31st and vouchers will be mailed to winners’ addresses on record in the first week of September.
The vouchers can be redeemed when the student is registered and attending an approved teacher education program at one of the following nine Faculties of Education:

  • Trinity Western University
  • Thompson Rivers University
  • University of the Fraser Valley
  • University of British Columbia
  • University of British Columbia – Okanagan
