Loran Award

9/20/2021

The selection of a Loran Scholar is unique in its attention to a young person’s character. We believe that integrity, courage, grit and personal autonomy are better indicators of overall potential than standard academic measures. To discover these traits, we administer the most comprehensive and thorough scholarship selection process in Canada. Tenable at 25 partner universities, the Loran Award is valued at $100,000 over four years, including mentorship, funding for summer internships and participation in an extensive network of past and present scholars. This year, we are offering up to 36 Loran Awards. In addition, we are granting up to 118 finalist and provincial & territorial awards ($5,000 or $2,000 each, respectively) to promising candidates.
In 2020/21, we conducted 1,704 virtual interviews with students from across the country and invited 72 finalists to participate in national interviews. Students describe the process as an opportunity to reflect on their motivations and to imagine the lives they want to live. Whether or not they are selected for an award, many students come away from interviews with new connections, friendships and ideas.

Eligibility Criteria for High School Students

  • Be in your final year of uninterrupted full-time studies in high school.
  • Present a minimum cumulative average of 85%.
  • Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
  • Be at least 16 years of age by September 1st of the following year.
Students who graduated in 2021 and are currently taking a gap year are also eligible to apply.

Applications for the 2022 Loran Award are now open! Get started today.
Our application process takes place annually in September/October. Shortlisted candidates are notified at least two weeks before their semi-final interview date.
There is no limit to the number of applicants from a single school.
Our committees review all applications and invite shortlisted candidates (semi-finalists) to attend online interviews. These interviews are an opportunity for semi-finalists to connect with one another, meet the local leaders who serve as our interviewers, and gain valuable interview experience.
After semi-final interviews, our committees invite outstanding semi-finalists to participate in our national interviews. Our committees also grant provincial & territorial awards ($2,000 each) and honour citations to semi-finalists who distinguish themselves at the semi-final level.

Due: October 13
