EFMABC BursariesThe Educational Facility Managers Association of British Columbia was pleased to award five $1,000.00 bursaries to graduates of the 2019/2020 school year. Our association is comprised of administrative and management personnel of school districts who are responsible for construction, maintenance and custodial services, etc.
These bursaries are offered to secondary students completing their grade 12 year who will enter a recognized post-secondary educational institution in the 2020/2021 term. Bursaries will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement and/or special needs. Preference will be given to students entering the fields of engineering, architecture, or building technology. Should there not be suitable applications received in these fields, students in other courses of study will be considered, however, all applicants MUST be dependents of school district employees in the school plant area (i.e. Maintenance or Custodial). As you may be aware, our Education Awards celebrate students who have overcome significant life challenges and succeeded during their school years. Our awards provide them with a financial boost as they transition to pursuing their post-secondary education.
This year, we’re once again offering 61 awards – 60 Standing Tall Awards, each worth $2,500, and one Beth Hutchinson Award (for Surrey School District students only), worth $5,000. This means that we have committed to offering over $150,000 to B.C. students to help them achieve what’s important in their life. BURSARIES Successful applicants are awarded annual bursaries ranging in value up to a maximum of approximately $4,415.00 (amount is indexed annually with the cost of living). Applications are evaluated on the following criteria: 1. General Eligibility An applicant must: • be a former permanent ward of the Ministry of Social Services of British Columbia, its predecessor or successor, or have been in continuing custody of the British Columbia Ministry for Children and Family Development under the Child, Family and Community Services Act or predecessor laws; • be at least 19 years of age as of the date studies commence; • be a high school graduate or equivalent currently enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary academic, technical or vocational program; • submit a completed current year application form; • provide transcripts from the last year of school attended; and • have other sources of funding for the educational year. The bursary shall not be the sole means of support. (Note: Permanent ward or continuing custody means a child, who by court order, was placed in the permanent or continuing custody of the Province of British Columbia. The custody order terminated when the child attained the age of 19 years, was married prior to attaining the age of 19 years, or the court cancelled the order prior to the child attaining the age of 19 years.) 2. Financial Need An applicant must: • demonstrate a financial shortfall which might cause the individual to be unable to pursue their studies; • have some means of financial support other than the bursary; • demonstrate an inability to access additional means of financial support to make up the shortfall; and • provide an estimated descriptive budget for the upcoming academic year based on reasonable expenses and reasonable means of financial support. Applications are open to all Grade 12 students currently enrolled in a Delta District Secondary School. Preference will be given to students who are pursuing either a post-secondary Bachelor of Music Education Degree Program.

The topic for this year’s public speaking event is: Should governments regulate social media and online content? The Barry Sullivan Law Cup is a province-wide public speaking competition honouring the memory of Barry Sullivan and his contributions to both the legal and educational professions. Finalists will be judged by esteemed professionals and, in previous years, have included Judges from the Courts in British Columbia and representatives from UBC and the media. Students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 from all regions of B.C. are encouraged to compete. Financial need is the primary basis for choosing recipients and priority is given to children, grand children or great grandchildren of veterans. We encourage all eligible students to apply, there are four bursaries and two of which are from the Poppy Fund, are awarded. Only two of the bursaries require the student to have a family member who was/is a veteran. There are 55 BC Excellence Scholarships available to recognize well-rounded B.C. graduates. Winners demonstrate service and leadership, both at school and in their communities. Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship
The online application form for the 2019/2020 school year is now available. The deadline is February 28, 2020. The Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship is awarded to 20 outstanding high school graduates who have demonstrated a commitment and aptitude for a career path in K-12 teaching. Winners receive a $5,000 scholarship voucher to redeem when they are registered and attending an approved K-12 teacher education program at one of BC’s nine Faculties of Education.Conditional winners and their schools will be notified by email in May. Winners will be notified directly in September when eligibility is confirmed. In the online application, you will be asked to provide specific information and additional attachments.

You are eligible to apply for a UBC Centennial Scholars Entrance Award if you are a strong academic student and meet all of UBC’s admission requirements. You must also be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or protected person in Canada who is entering UBC’s Okanagan or Vancouver campus directly from high school, or transferring from another post-secondary institution into a direct-entry program for your first undergraduate degree. Although you can specify two undergraduate degree choices in your application to UBC, your award application will only be considered for your first-choice campus and degree.
