Language 11 exemptions Students applying to UBC’s Vancouver campus must present a language 11 other than English. This requirement may be waived for students who:
  • entered the BC school system after Grade 9
  • have a diagnosed learning disability
To apply for this exemption, the student's school must email a written statement outlining the circumstances to language11.waiver@ubc.ca by February 15.
Transfer standing, External Language Certificates, and External Language Assessments at the Grade 11 level may be used for admission to UBC.
Applying to Engineering without Physics 12Students who have not taken Physics 12 are still encouraged to apply to Engineering if they are academically strong in Chemistry 12 and Pre-Calculus 12 (or equivalent).
Students from schools where Physics 12 or Chemistry 12 are not available may also apply (email details to grades.canada@ubc.ca).
Outstanding applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis, and may be admitted despite the missing course.
Distributed Learning deadlines Students may use Distributed Learning courses:
  • completed by February 1 to calculate their competitive admission average (in time for self-reporting)
  • completed by June 30 to meet program-specific requirements
This year, UBC will ask students why they chose a Distributed Learning course when they self-report.

We encourage you to tell your students about this innovative program.
The supplemental application (separate from UBC's online application) is simple, and requires students to submit a 90-second video essay.

Nursing UpdateApplication to KPU's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing (BPN) programs are still waiting for the Ministry's review and approval and have not yet opened for the Fall 2016 intake.

If approved, students must complete health foundations in their first year (similar to other institutions) prior to being admitted into the BSN or BPN program.

Rest assured that KPU will continue to offer the BSN program in September 2016 and the BPN program in May 2017, as per the university calendar; however, application dates have been delayed due to curriculum revisions.

In the meantime, please advise your students to apply for their second choice program. Students can switch over to health foundations once it's available through a program change form.

We will notify you as soon as the curricular revisions are approved.

KPU is implementing a new admissions framework effective September 2015 onwards for all applicants.

Notable Changes:

1. KPU's English Proficiency Requirement - All undergraduate applicants must meet KPU's English proficiency requirement through one of:

  • High school courses
    • A grade of C+ in English 12 or approved equivalency (formerly C)
    • A grade of A in Communications 12 (formerly C)
  • Testing options
    • KPU English Placement Test
    • IELTS: 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 (formerly 6.0 with no band less than 6.0)
    • TOEFL: 88 with no subscore less than 20 (formerly 80)
  • Post secondary courses
Other English equivalents can be found at: kpu.ca/transitions/changes

2. Admission to a Faculty
- Instead of admitting students to a credential (our current practice), KPU will admit new students to a Faculty.

3. Faculty Pathway
- Students who do not meet their desired Faculty's undergraduate admission requirements will be offered admission to a Faculty Pathway. The Pathway is a unique model which will allow students to still be admitted to their Faculty and take university level classes while upgrading.

4. New Applicant Categories
- KPU will now have the following applicant categories:  High School, Transfer, Mature, Aboriginal, General Interest, Concurrent, Exchange, Visiting.

5. New Online Application - KPU's new online application will be part of the ApplyBC portal, used by many other institutions. The new application will allow students to apply to their first and second choice Faculties, as well as save their progress and log back into their application.

For more information regarding the new admissions model, please visit kpu.ca/transitions.

English Requirement

Douglas College’s English-language proficiency requirement is based on both the course grade and provincial exam mark for English 12 with minimum grade of "C" or Communications 12 minimum grade of "B". However, the prerequisite for registering into English or Communications or Creative Writing courses is English 12 with a minimum B grade based on both the course grade and provincial exam mark. Students who have lower than a "B" grade in English 12 will need to upgrade or write and pass the Douglas College Writing assessment prior to registering into these courses.

Math Requirement

Foundations of Math 11 with a minimum grade of "C" will meet the requirements for most programs including admission requirements to universities however; students applying to a Science or University Transfer Business program will need to complete their Pre-calculus 12 with a minimal grade of "B". Students with lower than a "B" must write a Math assessment (pre-calculus or calculus readiness) prior to registration. Douglas College offers upgrading courses in mathematics. Please refer to: Assessment Services.

Important changes to UBC's admission (Vancouver campus)

11/21/2012

Changes to English 12 and English 12 First Peoples

We are  changing how we look at English 12 and English 12 First Peoples. These are very important courses for UBC; all our degree programs require students to do a lot of writing. Lately, we have noticed that a lot of BC secondary school students are admitted with English 12 course grades that are much higher than their provincial exam grades. We know that there are lots of reasons why a student may do better in their course than on the exam but the difference between the two should not be big. When we determine which English grade to use in the calculation of the admission average, we will continue our current practice: use the course grade or a blend of course grade and provincial exam grade (60%/40%), whichever is higher. But here is what’s new: if we see a big difference (20% or more) between the English 12 or English 12 First Peoples course grade and the provincial exam grade, we reserve the right to use the exam grade only.

If students have already written the English 12 or English 12 First Peoples provincial and the grade is much lower than the course grade, we suggest that student re-write the provincial exam in January.

****  You have until Dec 14, 2012 to notify the office if you want to re-write the provincial exam***

Do Grade 12 second semester/final-term course grades count at all?

Even if a student has been given an early offer of admission based on grades self-reported in February or March, it’s really important that they continue to do well in their second semester/final term of Grade 12. Here’s why: students who are given admission based on grades self-reported in February – March must maintain their current level of academic standing through to their final grades. If the final grades drop a little, no problem – we know that grades can change a little and we’ll not penalize students if that happens. But if the overall average on final grades is a lot lower than the grades used to gain admission, the offer of admission may be revoked.

Our goal is not to rescind offers; our goal is to encourage students to keep studying right through to the end of their final year. So tell your students to keep up the hard work and they will be fine, even if their grades drop a little after they have been admitted.

 How to self-report

Students currently attending BC/Yukon secondary schools (excluding students pursuing an International Baccalaureate Diploma) will self-report their grades between mid-February and late March – one month earlier than last year. Students must self-report their grades;applicants who do not self-report their grades will not be considered for admission for September 2013. To make things easy, we’ll email applicants a detailed set of self-reporting instructions closer to the date. All students will self-report via the Student Service Centre website using their Campus-wide Login name and password.

Queens Accelerated Medical Program

10/5/2012

Queen’s University Accelerated Route to Medical School (QuARMS) The Queen’s University Accelerated Route to Medical School (QuARMS) is a new opportunity for Chancellor’s Scholarship nominees to enter medical school after only two years of undergraduate study in the Arts, Science or Computing programs in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

QuARMS will offer 10 exceptional high school students a unique 2-year undergraduate educational opportunity that prepares them for direct entry into Queen’s medical school.  In addition to their enrollment in first and second year courses in the Faculty of Arts and Science, QuARMS students will be exposed to experiential learning strategies aimed at honing their skills in advocacy, communication, collaboration, and professionalism.  This new educational initiative, unique among post-secondary institutions across Canada, will shorten the minimum length of undergraduate training for students before entering medical school at Queen’s, while at the same time enriching and focusing their curricular and extracurricular university experiences to prepare them for direct entry into medical training. This reduces the time frame for receiving an MD, from one of Canada’s premier medical schools. QuARMS is the only admission track of its type in Canada for high school students.
